Uptime Institute Server Roundup! We’re pleased to announce the first Uptime Institute Server Roundup. According to our field experience 10% of your organization’s servers are likely sitting idle on the raised floor, wasting power and cooling resources. Decommissioning a single 1U rack server can result in $500 per year in energy savings, an additional $500 in operating system licenses, and $1,500 in hardware maintenance costs. Instead of piddling around shaving a point off your PUE, it’s time to get focused on what will make a real difference. It takes hard work to get in there and look for duplicated or unused applications, out-of-date, obsolete servers. Uptime Institute is offering a bounty on your comatose hardware. Go to our blog to find out more about contest prizes and rules. |

Participants were contacted by email from March-April 2011, and over 1,000 industry representatives responded. The Institute filtered vendor and consultant responses, focusing on the results from 525 data center executives. Respondents were primarily North America-based, and largely represented by the financial industry, colocation providers, and government agencies. Approximately one-half of the respondents manage over 2,000 servers.
