Panel: The investment drive in data centre infrastructure within Africa

Africa is riding on a crest of a wave, with major investment made over the last 12 to 24 months in new data centre infrastructure, and backed up by the incoming arrival of more hyper-scale cloud providers. With major investment being driven by international data centre operators, the continent is very much becoming a new frontier in the ICT infrastructure landscape. So what does this all mean for the region’s prospects in terms of interconnectivity in the coming years? We discuss:

• Carrier neutral selection: The investment driven into the carrier neutral market in Africa will increase to between $5–6bn over the next 3–5 years, according to a Balancing Act study in tandem with Console Connect. What implications will we see from the demand and buy side as a result of increased activity?
• Where do landlocked countries and more underserved markets fit into the equation?
• New long haul subsea projects and what it means for an interconnected ecosystem, as much as what it will do for increased bandwidth and capacity and the performance of applications such as content or mobile money
