Uptime Institute Veterans Initiative Website Launched

The Armed Forces has provided a longstanding and capable resource pool for data center management and operations. Today, veterans and reservists are experiencing higher than average unemployment, and more than one million will be returning from active duty in the next two years.  At the same time, the data center industry is facing a growing personnel crisis, as demand and capacity continue to increase, while large numbers of seasoned staff continue to retire.

Uptime Institute and the members of its North American Network have joined forces to address both of these issues at once, establishing a Veterans Initiative in November 2013. As a first step, a new website ( has just been launched to help introduce military veterans to the industry, and connect former service men and women with data center jobs, training, and career opportunities.

Employers in all sectors of the industry are urged to post job openings and information on the website to attract and recruit veterans and reservists. With the skills, discipline, and teamwork developed during military service, veterans present a rich source of talent well suited to the mission-critical data center environment.

Uptime Institute and TIA announced clear separation between Tier Classification System and ANSI/TIA-942/TIA-942A

Both the Uptime Institute and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) believe that it is in the best interests of the industry to permanently differentiate their respective data center infrastructure benchmarking systems and going forward, TIA will revise the ANSI/TIA-942/TIA-942A Standard to remove the word ‘Tier.’

The Uptime Institute created the standard Tier Classification System in the mid-1990s as a means to effectively evaluate data center infrastructure as it relates to business requirements for system availability.  The Uptime Institute’s Tier Classification System provides a consistent method to compare typically unique, customized facilities based on expected site infrastructure performance, or uptime.  Read the full press release here.

The Management and Operations (M&O) Stamp of Approval specifically addresses operator error as the leading cause of data center downtime. M&O Stamp is both an assessment methodology and formal award that validates the rigorous critical facilities management of existing data centers. The M&O methodology was built around risks identified by Uptime Institute analysis of actual outages and ratified by a group of industry stakeholders.

M&O Stamp is built around the fundamental notion that facilities management issues are addressable, often without a major resource commitment, and represents the single greatest opportunity to reduce risks to data center availability. Early adopters of M&O include Fujitsu,  Fortune, Morgan Stanley, Progressive, Colt, Equinix, Codisa, and Interxion. Click here to learn more
