Strengthening Operational Resilience and Commercial Services Through Tier-Certified Infrastructure

AKESO holding a.s. is a large private healthcare group in the Czech Republic, supported by a digital infrastructure strategy designed to strengthen operational continuity, data protection, and secure service delivery across the organization.

Case15 s.r.o., a newly established IT service organization within AKESO holding, operates the Beroun data center as a core infrastructure capability for the group and as a commercial data center serving external customers. The facility primarily supports the IT operations of 32 AKESO subsidiaries, with a focus on healthcare IT, server hosting, and smaller-scale AI development using medical data, while providing professional data center services for corporate clients.

The data center plays a central role in supporting AKESO’s internal operations and delivers commercial-grade colocation and related IT services. As digital infrastructure becomes increasingly critical to healthcare delivery and corporate operations, the Beroun data center helps AKESO improve resilience, security, and control across its IT environment, and extends these capabilities to external customers.

The Strategic Imperative

With the continued digitalization of healthcare, AKESO needed a secure, resilient, and scalable infrastructure platform capable of supporting mission-critical systems. The organization also sought to reduce reliance on external service providers while establishing a foundation for commercial data services, including housing, colocation, connectivity, security, and related professional IT solutions for corporate clients.

For AKESO, Tier Certification was a priority because of the group’s role in critical infrastructure and its strong reputation in healthcare. Independent validation from Uptime Institute offered a globally recognized benchmark for confirming that the facility had been built to support high standards of availability, resilience, and maintainability for both internal stakeholders and external customers.

“Completing Tier Certification of Constructed Facility is definitely worthwhile. It not only confirms the functionality of the project but also provides significant PR value for sales. I am proud to have been involved in the entire process—from construction, through regulatory approval and Tier Certification, to commissioning the holding’s private cloud and onboarding the first customers.”

The Challenge

From the beginning, the Beroun data center project required AKESO and Case15 to balance several priorities: supporting mission-critical healthcare systems, increasing physical and digital infrastructure security, enabling commercial services, and meeting recognized standards for resilience.

During construction, the team encountered delivery delays and errors in project documentation, which contributed to implementation challenges and further delays. These lessons reinforced the importance of careful project documentation review and validation, particularly for future certification projects.

AKESO needed to ensure that the data center could meet both internal operational demands and the expectations of external customers. As the facility would support healthcare IT, server hosting, AI development using medical data, and commercial and data center colocation offerings, independent validation of infrastructure quality became an important part of building confidence in the facility’s capabilities.

The Solution

For the Beroun data center, AKESO and Case15 aligned the facility’s design, construction, and operational readiness with Tier III requirements.

The facility was built to support concurrent maintainability, critical system redundancy, separation of essential components, and the ability to isolate failures without interrupting service. As part of the certification process, Uptime evaluated the facility’s infrastructure, operational scenarios, maintainability, and failure response capabilities.

To prepare for the final review, AKESO engaged a specialist with European data center certification experience and completed extensive internal preparation. Uptime’s assessment provided the independent, rigorous validation needed to confirm that the facility’s infrastructure, operational scenarios, maintainability, and failure response capabilities met Tier III requirements.

The Outcome

For AKESO, the Beroun data center represents more than a certification milestone. It enabled the creation of a new IT service organization built from the ground up to a high standard, supporting the consolidation of the holding’s IT operations and significantly increasing physical and infrastructure security.

The facility now provides a resilient foundation for AKESO’s internal healthcare systems while also supporting standard data center and colocation services for corporate clients, including housing, connectivity, security, and other professional IT services. With Tier III Certification of Constructed Facility, AKESO has a globally recognized credential that strengthens customer confidence and reinforces the facility’s role as a trusted commercial-grade infrastructure platform.

As few organizations in the country hold this level of certification, the achievement provides meaningful differentiation in discussions with potential external customers and supports Case15’s expansion into colocation and related IT services.

Looking Ahead

The Beroun data center is a key part of AKESO’s broader long-term infrastructure strategy and establishes a strong foundation for the group’s next phase of digital growth. Building on this achievement, AKESO is planning a larger data center at its second hospital in Hořovice, which has already achieved Tier IV Certification of Design Documents. Once completed, AKESO plans to pursue Tier IV Certification of Constructed Facility for the Hořovice data center.

Together, the Beroun and Hořovice facilities will support AKESO’s need for geographically separated infrastructure, enabling geo-clustering for internal systems while creating additional opportunities to serve customers with secure, resilient data center services. As the New Generation Hospital project in Hořovice continues to advance, secure and scalable IT infrastructure will remain central to AKESO’s healthcare, operational resilience, and digital services strategy.

For organizations considering Tier Certification, AKESO emphasizes the value of early preparation, experienced guidance, and a strong understanding of the certification process. Their experience also highlights the importance of allowing time for trial operations, internal review, and a full certification rehearsal before the final assessment.

Through its Tier Certified infrastructure, AKESO is strengthening the digital foundation behind its healthcare operations today while preparing for the next generation of secure, resilient, and scalable services for internal and external customers.
