Uptime Institute, the global data center authority, has a long pedigree of thought leadership in the field of mission-critical infrastructure. 

As IT and digital infrastructures transition to more dynamic and complex architectures, Uptime Institute plans to expand the breadth and depth of its research.

To help achieve this, Uptime Institute is seeking several Affiliated Research Leaders who can work alongside our research team on a part time, contracted or ad hoc basis. An Affiliated Research Leader may hold other positions in the sector or academia but must not have a conflict of interest.

An Affiliated Research Leader should have a strong understanding of the practices, technology and/or business models in one of the fields below:

  • Data center economics/costs and business models

The affiliate can work remotely in any country, but must:

  • have exceptional written English communication skills

Analyst/Advisor – Workforce development specialist for critical digital infrastructure

Uptime Institute is a global authority on data centers and digital infrastructure. We advise and train clients around the world on data center design, resiliency, operations, sustainability, and economics. We are now deepening our research work in the areas of skills and staffing. We are seeking an advisor/analyst to specialize in this area, undertaking the following:

  • Help to develop models and quantify requirements for the staffing needs of data centers of all types.
  • Identify training needs and career paths for data center professionals.
  • Build salary models for key roles in data centers and in critical digital infrastructure.
  • Assess the use and future impact of automation and AI on staffing.
  • Assess the current and future impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on working practices and staffing demand.
  • Write reports and advise clients on all aspects of staffing and skills.

Experienced editor – Mission-critical digital infrastructure

Uptime Institute is a global authority on data centers and digital infrastructure. We advise and train clients around the world on data center design, resiliency, operations, sustainability, and economics. We also publish regular, independent, and authoritative reports on all aspects of digital infrastructure for our members and readers around the world.

We are seeking an experienced copy editor to join our diverse and global team of analysts and editors. The mission is to help us produce reports that are engaging, fluent, concise and grammatically sound. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A proven ability to transform sometimes dense technical drafts into crisp, compelling and lively reports that appeal to both technical and non-technical executives.
  • Analytical rigor and attention to detail.
  • At least 5 years’ related experience.
  • Familiarity working with technology-focused copy, both short- and long-form.
  • A proven ability:
    • To write engaging headings, captions and summaries.
    • To restructure and sometimes re-write copy, working collaboratively with contributors.
    • To manage external resources/writers.
  • The confidence to edit and sometimes direct experienced contributors.

Uptime Institute’s Intelligence unit is the independent research arm of Uptime Institute. We publish regular, authoritative and insightful reports on all aspects of digital infrastructure for our members and thousands of followers around the world. Our research areas range from energy and environmental sustainability to data center design and operations, from IT outages to innovation, and from economic cost modeling to staffing and diversity requirements. 

We are seeking self-motivated individuals with strong research, writing and interpersonal skills to join our team on a one-year training/associate contract, working remotely.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the fast growing, critical industry from the inside, and to contribute to influential reports and data projects that are used the world over.

The Research Associate will:

  • Help compile and organize data from surveys and field sources.
  • Research complex topics and assemble material for publication/analysis.
  • Work with our analysts, technical experts and engineers in support of research engagements.
  • Learn to edit/write short research reports for publication, and to contribute to longer reports.
  • Help to produce presentations and other externally facing material.

Title: Technical Editor

Report to: Senior Director, Technical Communications

The Technical Editor is accountable for effective communications, document management and controls, design and format, and editorial integrity of client reports and deliverables. This individual is responsible for professional editorial support that complies with corporate editorial standards; effective use of procedures, tools, and templates; and accurate, timely communications regarding document status and formal reviews. The Technical Editor performs as part of a team and works collaboratively to produce large volumes of work with consistent quality.

This individual assists with the development and maintenance of client reports, education curriculum, technical publications, internal training materials, and other documentation. With responsibility across multiple concurrent projects, this position is characterized by shifting priorities, stringent deadlines, and potential last-minute requirements. The Technical Editor works closely with key stakeholders to apply the principles of minimalist writing, task-based writing, and content reuse strategies to deliver compelling and clear documentation. The Technical Editor also works with key leaders in the organization and members of other departments to ensure the quality of all technical communication.

Responsibilities

  • Edit and format all internal and external technical communications to Uptime Institute quality standards for grammar, content flow, clarity, voice, consistency, corporate style, and accuracy.
  • Information design for technical reports, publications, and other content.
  • Closely collaborate with project management, consultants, and subject matter experts and other teams.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of technical editing experience, including layout and design.

  • Ability to develop non-technical memorandums, executive summaries, guidelines, or notices, and source or create supporting graphics based on the key points captured in technical documents.
